Research Contribution :
Dr. K. Venugopalan obtained his M.Sc. degree from University of Calicut followed bya Ph.D. Degree in physics, in the area of Nuclear Spectroscopy on the Topic "Electric Field Gradients in Metals" using Mossbauer Spectroscopic and Perturbed Angular Correlation Techniques, from Mohan Lal Sukhadia University Udaipur. The most significant contribution ofihe Ph.D. work was special heat treatment techniques used in doping of Fe-57 isotopes in Arsenic and Selenium and establishing that universal correlation constant of EFG holds good even in the presence of a high degree of covalency. National facilities like cyclotron (at VECC, Calcutta), pelletron (at NSC, New Delhi) and Dhruva Reactor (at BARC, Mumbai) were used in the investigation of hyperfine interactions in metals and alloys. Under the UGC DRS programme, development of new magnetic materials were undertaken and the research group could produce new Fe-Cr-AI alloys alloys. X-ray characterisation of one of these (Fe2CrAL) has been incorporated for use as standard data in the JCPDS (Joint Committee for Powder Diffraction Standards) database. Neutron & X-ray diffraction studies are use din the study of disorders in the Fe based Heusler like magnetic alloys. Development of permanent magnetic materials as well as thin films of magnetic materials are being undertaken currently under UGC COSIST Programme. Dr. K.Venugopalan has been trained in computer science from short term courses followed by training programme at Hefei. He has also received training in computer application and system software from ICTP, Trieste, Italy. In the area of computer science, he is presently interested in computer networks computer simulations, scientific visualizations in Physics.Physics related to adaptive optics, Image analysis and processing.
